Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary branch that focuses on developing methods to regrow, replace, or repair damaged cells, tissues, and organs. Regenerative medicine includes the use of autologous components such as blood base components (for example – PRP) and stem cells in the repair of chondral and osteochondral defects.
Cartilage is highly hydrated, but it is not innervated or vascularised and has low cell availability, and because of that has a limited potential for self-renewal. Due to the above mentioned, repair of cartilage damage is one of the biggest challenges in orthopedy. An autologous cartilage scaffold is a combination of several approaches and substrates isolated from the patient.
The autologous scaffold developed by our group is composed of 3 components: platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate–concentrate (BMAC), and bio-regenerative fibrin (BRF), and it is very effective in treating cartilage defects.
