Dr. Sanja Medenica was born in 1984 in Bar, where she completed her primary and secondary education with “Luča” diplomas. She graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Belgrade in July 2009 and received a Commendation from the Faculty of Medicine for being the best student in the fifth year. She completed her postgraduate specialist academic studies and PhD in endocrinology at the same faculty with the highest grades and earned the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences. She completed her medical internship at the Clinical Center Zvezdara, after which she worked as a clinical physician volunteer in the Department of Thyroid Diseases at the Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolic Diseases of the University Clinical Center of Serbia.
She was an assistant in the subjects of Histology with Embryology and Internal Medicine, and in 2022, she was appointed as an Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montenegro.
Since 2012, she has been employed in the Department of Endocrinology at the Internal Clinic of the Clinical Center of Montenegro, first as a clinical physician and later as a specialist trainee in Internal Medicine, which she completed at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade in 2019. She completed her subspecialization in endocrinology at the same faculty in 2022 with the highest grades.
Assoc. Prof. Sanja Medenica has been the EYES ambassador for Montenegro since 2018. She is the recipient of an award for the best presentation titled “Application of sulfonylurea derivatives with modified release in type 2 diabetics to assess the quality of glycoregulation, cardiovascular protection, and kidney protection,” awarded by the Croatian Diabetes and Metabolism Society of the Croatian Medical Association, as well as the winner of the award for the best oral presentation in the session on Reproductive Endocrinology at the EYES 2022 Congress. As the first-place winner in the EYES Clinical Observership Programme, she attended a month-long educational program in 2022 at Policlinico Universitario Gemelli in Rome under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Alfredo Pontecorvi.
She has attended numerous educational programs in the country and abroad, including: a course on ultrasound of the thyroid gland at the Special Hospital for Thyroid Diseases and Metabolism, Čigota, Zlatibor in 2014, the same year a training on the basic principles of insulin pump therapy in Belgrade, the EASD Postgraduate Course “Zdenko Škrabalo” in Zagreb in February 2017, a continuous medical education program on urgent care for critically ill patients in hospital settings in Belgrade in 2017, a course on ultrasound diagnostics in endocrinology in 2018 (Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolic Diseases, UKCS Serbia), a thyroid ultrasound course in Belgrade in 2022 (Antamedica Clinic), a one-week Postgraduate Course on GH and Growth Factors – Metabolic Disorders in Gothenburg/Marstrand in May 2024, and training on insulin pumps at the Clinic for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolic Diseases, UKCS Serbia.
She has been a participant, invited speaker, and moderator at numerous national and international symposia, seminars, and congresses, published several scientific papers in reputable medical journals, and presented research results at conferences in the country and abroad in the form of poster and oral presentations. She is a reviewer for prestigious journals indexed in international databases.
She has organized several national congresses and symposia with international participation. She was the vice-president, now honorary member, of the Global Regenerative Academy and the president of the 5th Global Congress on Regenerative Medicine in Budva, held in September 2024.
She is fluent in English and Italian.
Dr. Medenica is the Honorary Consul of the Italian Embassy in Montenegro. She is the current Secretary of the Endocrinologists’ Association of Montenegro. She is a member of various domestic and international professional organizations: the Medical Chamber of Montenegro, the Montenegrin Association for Menopause and Involutive Hypoandrogenism (CAMA), the European Society of Endocrinology, ESE Young Endocrinologists & Scientists, the Serbian Thyroid Society, the European Thyroid Association, the Associazione Medici Endocrinologi, ENS@T – member of the working group of the European Network for the Study of Adrenal Tumors.
